Ten minste

And the Dutch Word Of The Day is back in 2010!! We hope that everybody has recovered fully from the holidays 🙂

"Ten minste" is composed of "ten" and "minste". "Ten" is a somewhat old-fashioned preposition which translates to "at", and "minste", or "minst", translates to "least" of "fewest". Synonymous to "ten minste" are "op zijn minst", "minstens" or "minimaal".

And now the tricky bit: there’s also "tenminste", which is one word and which also translates to "at least", or "anyway", "anyhow" or "…that is". It has a different meaning though and is used in a different context, which will hopefully become clear from the examples. Synonymous to "tenminste" is "althans".

Of course, most Dutch don’t know when to use "ten minste" or "tenminste" 🙂

– "Ik ben ten minste twee en een halve kilo aangekomen tijdens de feestdagen…" 
("I’ve gained at least two and a half kilos during the holidays…")

– "Deze bank is ten minste 150 euro waard." 
("This couch is worth at least 150 euros.")

– "Ik ben misschien niet slim, maar ik weet tenminste hoe ik een dame moet behandelen!" 
("I may not be smart, but at least I know how to treat a lady!")

– "Stan zal zeker een medaille winnen, tenminste, als hij niet wordt uitgesloten van deelname." 
("Stan will win a medal for sure, if he’s not excluded from participating, that is.")

Related words:
– Minimaal: minimum, minimal [adjective/adverb].
– Minstens: at least [adverb].

Example:
– "Vanochtend heeft Frank minstens een half uur lang over zijn baas geroddeld."
("Frank has spread gossip about his boss for at least half an hour this morning.")

Sfeer

Kerstverlichting
"Sfeer" is used for "atmosphere" in the context of ambiance or character; when you want to discuss the earth’s atmosphere or measure pressure, we say "atmosfeer". Sometimes "sfeer" is also used figuratively for ‘scope’ or ‘domain’, see the examples.

Examples:
– "Als ik jou was zou ik Frank niet uitnodigen voor de kerstlunch; hij verpest altijd de sfeer met zijn gezeur over het management." 
("I wouldn’t invite Frank to the Christmas lunch if I were you; he always ruins the atmosphere with his whining about the management.")

– "De kerstverlichting in de Amsterdamse straten zorgt voor een goede sfeer." 
("The Christmas lighting in the streets of Amsterdam creates a good atmosphere.")

– "Gefeliciteerd met je nieuwe huis, je hebt er echt een fijne sfeer gecreëerd!" 
("Congrats on the new house, you have absolutely created a pleasant atmosphere." Note the use of "er"; it implies location, in this case the house.)

– "Maastricht is een stad met een heel eigen sfeer." 
("Maastricht is a city with a distinctive character.")

– "Doe jij aan meditatie?" –  "Nee, maar ik verkeer wel regelmatig in hogere sferen!" 
("Do you practise meditation?" – "No, but I do have my head in the clouds on a frequent basis!")

– "Wat vind jij dat we als eerste uit de criminele sfeer moeten halen?" 
("What do you believe to be the first thing that we should decriminalize?")

Related words:
– Sfeerverhogend: "creating a better atmosphere" [adjective/adverb]. This word was introduced by the main character in the Dutch film "Simon" and its usage has become somewhat popular. The opposite is "sfeerverlagend".
– Invloedssfeer: sphere/range of influence [noun] [de invloedssfeer, <no plural>].

Example:
– "Het spijt me, maar mijn invloedssfeer is beperkt tot dit kantoor."
("I’m sorry, but I have no influence outside this office.")

– Sfeerverlichting: atmospheric lighting [noun] [de verlichting, <no plural>].
– Sfeervol: full of atmosphere [adjective]
– Atmosfeer: atmosphere (physics) [noun] [de atmosfeer, de atmosferen].
– Stemming: mood [noun] [de stemming, de stemmingen].
– Bol: sphere (mathematics) [noun] [de bol, de bollen].

Knipperlichtrelatie

"Knipperlichtrelatie" is composed of "knipperlicht" and "relatie": "indicator/blinker" and "relationship" respectively. "Knipperlichtrelatie" is used to refer to a relationship that runs hot and cold.

Some amateur psychology: a "knipperlichtrelatie" may be the consequence of one or both partners repeatedly drawing the conclusion that the other is not Mr. or Mrs. Right, followed – after some time – by the conclusion that one cannot live without the other. This is often related to "bindingsangst": fear of commitment (lit.: connection fear), the feeling that your freedom ceases to exist  as soon as you engage in a relationship…

Examples:
– "Ik ben een beetje bezorgd…Frank heeft al jaren een knipperlichtrelatie…" 
("I’m a bit worried…Frank has a relationship that’s running hot and cold for years now…")

– "Peter is een kletsmajoor! Ik heb helemaal geen knipperlichtrelatie met Cindy!" 
("Peter is a blabbermouth! My relationship with Cindy is not running hot and cold all the time!")

– "Doris heeft steeds dezelfde scharrel…" – "Dat is gewoon een knipperlichtrelatie…" 
("Doris always picks up the same guy…" – "That’s just a relationship running hot and cold…")

Expressions:
– "De ware Jacob": a girl’s/woman’s true love, Mr. Right (lit.: the true Jacob).
– "De prins op het witte paard": Mr. Right (lit.: the prince on the white horse).

Example:
– "Zij heeft de ware Jacob nog niet gevonden." – "Geen zorgen, haar prins op het witte paard zal op een dag verschijnen…"
("She hasn’t found her true love yet." – "No worries, Mr. Right will appear one day…")

– "Op ieder potje past een dekseltje": <literally> on every jar/pot fits a lid, meant as comforting to those who still have not found their significant other..

Related words:
– Bindingsangst: fear of commitment [noun] [de bindingsangst, de bindingsangsten].
– Knipperlicht: blinker, indicator [noun] [het knipperlicht, de knipperlichten].

Example:
– "Allebei de knipperlichten aan de voorkant van de auto zijn kapot. Die moet je z.s.m. laten repareren!"
("Both indicators on the front of the car are broken. You need to get those fixed a.s.a.p.!" Note: z.s.m. stands for "zo spoedig mogelijk": (lit.:) as speedy as possible)

Uitsluiten

"Uitsluiten" can be used for both ‘excluding a possibility’  or ‘making something impossible’.

Examples:
– "De organisatie sluit niet uit dat het feest naar een andere datum verschoven zal worden." 
("The organizing committee does not rule out the possiblity that the party will be moved to a different date.")

– "Na de valse start werd de atleet uitgesloten van verdere deelname." 
("After the false start the athlete was debarred from further participation.")

– "Kunnen we dan niet met de trein gaan?" – "Nee, dat is uitgesloten want die vertrekt pas na 11 uur." 
("Can’t we just take the train?" – "No, that is out of the question because it does not depart until after 11 o’clock.")

– "Ik geef toe dat we niet kunnen uitsluiten dat er gesjoemeld is met de uitslagen." 
("I admit that we cannot rule out the possibility that the results have been rigged with.")

– "De precieze dag is nog niet bekend, maar het is uitgesloten dat het op een donderdag zal plaatsvinden." 
("The exact day/date is not yet known, but it is certain that it will not take place on a Thursday.")

– "Ik weet niet wat het goede antwoord is op deze multiplechoicevraag, maar wellicht kan ik er een paar uitsluiten."
("I do not know the correct answer to this multiple choice question, but perhaps I can rule out a few." There is a perfectly acceptable Dutch equivalent for ‘multiple choice’ which is ‘meerkeuze’; but you still often hear e.g. ‘multiplechoicevraag’.)

Expressions:
– "Het één sluit het ander niet uit": the one does not exclude the other.

Example:
– "Gaan jullie eten of gewoon naar een café?" – "Ik weet het nog niet, maar het één hoeft het ander niet uit te sluiten natuurlijk."
("Are you going out for dinner or just to a bar?" – "I don’t know yet, but the one does not have to exclude the other of course.")

– Uitsluitsel: decisive/definite answer [noun] [het uitsluitsel, de uitsluitsels].

Example:
– "Over het lot van de gegijzelde kon de ambassade geen uitsluitsel geven."
("The embassy could not give a definite answer about the fate of the hostage.")

– Uitsluiting: exclusion [noun] [de uitsluiting, de uitsluitingen]. 

Gniffelen

Sometimes it’s hard to keep a straight face and if you can resist laughing out loud, you might end up chuckling ("gniffelen"). "Gniffelen" is one of the few Dutch words which has an "n" preceding succeeding a "g" in the same syllable. The verb "giechelen" ("to giggle") has a slightly similar meaning but is more often used when referring to girls or women.

Examples:
– "Wat sta je daar nu te gniffelen? Dit is een serieuze zaak!" 
("What are you chuckling about? This is a serious matter!")

– "Ik heb echt geprobeerd om mijn lach in te houden maar moest toch een beetje gniffelen." 
("I really tried to keep a straight face but had to chuckle a little bit after all." Lit.: "I really tried to restrain my laughter but …")

– " <Leraar:> Jongens, stop eens met dat gegniffel of ik laat jullie vanmiddag nablijven." 
("<Teacher:> Boys, stop chuckling or I’ll put you in detention this afternoon.")

Expressions:
– "Lachen, gieren, brullen": laughing, screaming, shreaking.

Example:
– "Het was weer lachen, gieren, brullen tijdens de surprise-avond."
("We had a real laugh again during the surprise-evening.")
